Artist's Comments: This character was a self creation after some thinking. Usually, I design only one or two clothings and keep reusing them for other characters, but for this, I created a different kind and "feel" for the armor. I was pretty excited by the design, and I know I slipped off in the proportions, and the left leg was painful to sketch (especially with a different mechanical pencil and lead), so I left it out. I also know the errors in the slightly bigger head and mouth. I used a mechanical 2B pencil for this picture. Critics reviewing this piece, please tell me how long I need more to reach pro. :)

Laine Says: ooh nice shading :D it gives the picture a great mood , with a bit of sepia tinting it'll look totally medieval XD

For going pro..i think one cannot be too eager about it , i mean , being pro doesn't only mean being able to draw well ... but that's turning into a lecture so i'll shut up about it :P

I can see a few bits to improve here , namely the detail aspect since your proportions are pretty good already . The hilt thing on his sword , it looks rather rough on close inspection . A way to improve this is to refer to sword pictures and draw them repeatedly , among other small details you can add are slight bumps to the wrapping on the handle ( forgive me , im a dummy at sword terminology XP ) as how leather would be slightly uneven when it is wrapped . ( er...bad description , i know ;_; )

The legs , shield and shoe need the same treatment...right now while they look great on the surface , they're kinda a notch beneath what you see from pro pics ( since you asked XP *runs like hell* ) oh and the belt thing..is it a belt? if it is , and if it's supposed to be flapping in the wind , it needs to be softer and look more..cloth like . right now it looks rather dangerous actually :P ( *dodges flaming bricks* )

Hm...looking at it more..looks like the folds could do with some work too....the shadows on his sleeve are rather triangular and jagged..don't look natural ...as with his collar thing and glove holding the sword .

All in all , i would say your senses of proportion, shading and lighting are pretty good already :D just need to work on things like folds , adding minor details that will add credibilty . for improving postures and drawing dynamic postures...i can only say practice ! just doodling your brains out will make you manipulate the body to weird poses occasionally which will become habit later XD gambare ne !

Lorelai Says: Hi Arias! This picture is really great, i LOVE his expression T_T it seems contemplative and sad! as my pal Juno-sama said, you really know when someone's a good artist when they draw great expressions...his mouth is a wee bit low, but that's often done in anime/manga style artwork, so maybe that's intentional. (Gives them a pouty, embarrassed or mullified look) His outfit is really cool, and his shield has a great design, but seems sort of flat compared to the rest of the picture (which is very well shaded). I think it's cuz you introduce a new light source, coming from the right, in addition to the really obvious one from behind/left. His boots/feet are unusually small, but I can take that as a stylistic liberty (Like Tactics faces/hands). You're doing really well...I wish i could pencil shade like this all the time!! =D Good luck with all future endeavors and keep up the great work! (and finish this picture XD)
