Artist's Comments: strengths and weaknesses: i would like to improve my art skills within drawing and within computer graphics. this critique will point out some points which i can change within my artwork so i can improve with what i'm doing, and what i love doing.

i'm just a beginner in the art world, i've been drawing for years but i got serious about it only a few months ago, this is why i am showing my drawings so i can get some feedback with how i'm doing. my drawings were sketches that were inked in photoshop and panted in photoshop aswell. thanks ^_^

Keiiii Says: Hoiiii~ Oog, Photoshop inking. Digital inking creates perfectly clean lines like in your pic. But Photoshop inking, using either paths or freehand, has a disadvantage in terms of making the lines look natural by giving them some varieties. As far as I know (I could be wrong... ^^;;) using paths in Photoshop doesn't give any variety in line thickness in a single line. Identical looking lines/curves have their own purposes, but in most manga style pics, they're kind of boring compared to varied lines, especially around the character's eyes. Here's my little example of a feminine eye~ [http://cozy.rydia.net/temp/eye.jpg] You'll see that the upper eyeline is much thicker than the lower eyeline, which is already a bit thicker than other lines. Yet the upper eyeline's thickness doesn't appear so wrong because the line tapers at the ends. Try tapering and thickness variety! ^^ Another thing I want to comment is the character's hair. I like how you gave her layered hair in her ponytail~~~ But her bang's kinda odd looking in relation to her face. The hair itself looks fine, but it makes her forehead look really small. Imagine a line going across horizontally at the lower end of her nose, and another line going horizontally at her eyebrows. In real life, the height from the lower line to the upper line should be 1/3 of the "height" of the face; from the lower end of the nose to the chin is the other 1/3, and the forehead takes the rest (although it varies from person to person). Keeping the 1/3 thing in your mind, imagine the forehead lines on the character, and make the bangs start from the line, not below. Hope me tips helped~

Lorelai Says: Heiiiii there! ^_^ Nice piccie! Okei, lesse. There are a few things ye should know about portraits...the first thing your audience will see are the eyes. This girl's eyes lacks whites, and also the reflection in the eye...reflections don't quite work that way ^_^ check out some different anime/cartoons, or better yet, real eyes... Your eyes are convex surfaces (they curve outward) and they catch the light in interesting ways. If you get a basic pattern down, ye can make your eyes stunning and glossy very easily! I also heavily reccommend you do some real-life observation on shading..the picture is very flat because there are no strong shadows. Also, ye should try not to outline the hair as a shape, but as groups of strands. remember, hair is a single mass, but not a single SOLID mass! In general I think it's the face that needs the most attention, so work on that for now...observe, and learn - it's the best method by far ^___^ Good luck, great work, ttyl!

Laine Says: oooog , okay lesee....the line art is nice =D could use some work on the coloring ne ! try putting in shading , to show which areas are dark and which areas are light, like how shadows and such appear on things when light is shone upon them ? faces and bodies and even hair have contours and bumpies on them =D when hair is covering the face slightly , there will be shadows cast and there will be shadows/dark parts under the collar bones , beneath the breasts , highlights on the cheekbones etc. !

secondly , the eyes look a bit...oog ! hm...even for a surprised look , they look a wee bit "dead" . uhm...make any sese ? :P another thing , the hair looks a bit stiff ...at the ponytail that is . mmm..yeah thats all i think :D

hope this helps , gambare ne !
