STEP 3: Drawing Wavy/ Curly Hair

Below is just two examples of many possibilities of curly hair styles. Let's call the red one wavy, the green one curly.

Wavy hair and curly hair

    Wavy Hair

The image to the left shows what a curl of wavy hair looks like. Curly hair in my artworks show all the individual curls; I get started by drawing one curl by one. The image to the right is something to help you understand the "structure" of one curl of wavy hair. Basically, it looks like a ribbon, except it's made of strands of hair instead of fabric.

If you happen to have wavy hair like that, try picking up a curl (not just a single hair, a whole curl) and examine it!

How to draw curly!

Now let's start drawing it! Making a curl isn't hard; the first three steps of above picture shows you how. Start by drawing two or three curves like in the first step (leftmost), then add more curves. Just keep the "ribbon structure" in your mind as you do so. If you're having hard time drawing smooth curves, practice by repeatedly drawing simple curves of different angle and size.

After you've done your first curl, add about a dozen of curls similar to the one you've just made! To make the hair look more natural, try drawing bigger and smaller curls, longer and shorter curls, curlier and more straight ones, etc.

    Curly Hair

This is actually not very different from the wavy kind, just a bit more curly. Think of a somewhat loosened up telephone cord instead of a ribbon this time. However, because of the intense curliness, this kind of hair can look kind of funny even when it's drawn correctly, like below:

The way those two curls are shaped seems rather incomprehensible before you know how to make a curl in real life. Take some straight hair or wavy hair (a substitute like a ribbon is also fine), roll it tight around a round stick, and you have curly hair (well, with a stick in the middle). Try to roll it in a way that the stick is almost completely covered with hair or whatever you are using like in the image to the left.

With the understanding of the coil-like structure of a curl, we can now start drawing' em. The process is pretty similar to that of wavy hair.

When you're drawing a character with hair this curly, remember to give him/her very poofy hair! The curlier the hair is, the poofier it looks given the same actual amount of the hair.
